It was preceded by the web series Detective Skills, which focuses on Hitchcock and Scully.

- It has been confirmed that Andre Braugher and Chelsea Peretti will continue to appear as series regulars despite their characters' exit from the Nine-Nine at the end of season two[1]. They returned to their positions in Episode 4.
- At the time of the season two finale's broadcast, no actor had been cast in the role of the new captain[1].
- On July 30, 2015, it had been announced that Archie Panjabi had been cast as Lieutenant Singh in the second episode of the season due to air on October 4, 2015[2].
- On August 6, 2015, it was revealed that Bill Hader had been cast as Seth Dozerman, the new captain of the 99th Precinct.[3]
- On October 14, 2015 it was revealed that Nick Offerman had been cast as Frederick, an ex-boyfriend of Ray Holt.[4]
- On November 10, 2015 it was announced that after the holidays the show would move to Tuesdays at 9.00 PM, the same night but a half hour later than where the majority of Season One episodes aired.[5]
- On November 16, 2015, Melissa Fumero announced that she was pregnant with her first child. Her pregnancy will not be written into the show.[6]
- On November 20, 2015, it was revealed that Niecy Nash had been cast as Captain Holt's sister, Debbie in an episode scheduled to air in January.[7]
- On December 4, 2015, it was revealed that Kathryn Hahn had been cast as Charles Boyle's ex-wife, Eleanor in the mid-season premiere due to air on January 5, 2016.[8]
- On December 7, 2015, it was revealed that Katey Sagal had been cast as Jake Peralta's mother, Karen Peralta in an episode airing in early 2016. It was also announced that Bradley Whitford would reprise his role as Jake's father, Roger Peralta.[9]
- On December 14, 2015, it was revealed that Damon Wayans Jr. had been cast as Jake Peralta's former beat partner, Stevie, in an episode airing in early 2016.[10]
- On January 25, 2016, it was revealed that Jason Mantzoukas had been cast as Adrian Pimento in an upcoming episode.[11]
- On March 11, 2016, it was revealed that Dennis Haysbert had been cast as FBI Special Agent Bob Anderson in the final two episodes airing April 12 and April 19, 2016.[12]
