Hitchcock and Scully have identical mason jars

Scully arrives to work and shows Jake Peralta a mason jar full of lemonade that he obtained. Jake then excitedly gathers the rest of the squad in the break room to inform them that Hitchcock had earlier showed him a goldfish inside an identical mason jar. Jake then suggests that they bet on whether Scully will drink Hitchcock's fish or if Hitchcock will put fish food inside Scully's lemonade, when Rosa Diaz points out that Hitchcock is currently drinking his own fish.

Amy Santiago arrives at work a couple of minutes late, and explains to Jake that she fell asleep in the morning as she was unable to sleep well on Jake's mattress. Jake then cheers Amy up by informing her that he has arrested a man named Devon for possessing a drug called "Taxi", and suggests the two of them work on the case together, the first time since they started dating. In the breakroom, Rosa introduces Terry Jeffords to Sam Malone, a teenage boy she is mentoring as part of the "Brooklyn's Big Brother" program. After crudely sending Sam away, Rosa tells Terry that she loves being a mentor. Amy and Jake meet with Captain Holt to ask to be assigned to the drug case together. While Holt is initially skeptical of putting couples in the field together, he relents since he considers Jake and Amy two of his best detectives, on the condition that any personal issues will not jeopardize the case. Amy assures Holt that the two of them have never even quarreled before as a couple, sans an incident where Jake did not know who Will Shortz was. Holt is taken aback and asks if Amy is sure she wants to date Jake, before withdrawing his statement and leaving the couple stunned. Boyle returns to the bullpen annoyed and tells Gina Linetti that someone has parked an old convertible in Holt's parking spot and halfway into his own. Before Boyle can rant to Holt as well, Gina interrupts him mid-conversation to reveal that the car belonged to Holt himself, who has affectionately named the car "Gertie". In the briefing room, Jake and Amy plan an ambush for Devon's drug dealer when Jake catches Amy making a grammar mistake. As Amy protests that she was just tired, the two briefly argue about Jake's mattress before stopping themselves.

Jake disguises himself as an environmental activist and he and Amy manage to arrest the drug dealer after a foot chase. As Jake pins the dealer onto a mattress by the alley's dumpster, Amy points out to his horror that the mattress is identical to the one in his apartment. Jake then agrees to Amy's delight to get a new mattress. In the precinct, Terry informs Rosa that Sam was arrested for shoplifting. Rosa then angrily confronts Sam by the holding cell and threatens to make him rot in juvie for the rest of his life. Terry brings Rosa away and suggests that she let Sam off with a warning as being too harsh may lead to a horrible outcome for him, but Rosa scoffs at his suggestion. Meanwhile, Boyle informs Gina that he accidentally scratched Gertie when he tried to squeeze into his parking spot. Gina suggests Boyle tell Holt the truth since it was Holt's fault for parking in two spots and believes Holt will not be angry. To their surprise, Holt is enraged and blames Boyle entirely for the incident, demanding that Boyle pay for the full cost of fixing Gertie. Jake and Amy arrive at a mattress store where they manage to find a model that they enjoy. Jake however finds the price to be too steep, even though he spent twice the amount previously for Mr. Met to come to his birthday. Amy tells Jake that the mattress would be a good investment since it would allow her to finally have a good night's sleep with him, but Jake insists that he does not feel the mattress is worth it. Amy is offended, as she believes Jake does not think that she is worth the investment and leaves, telling Jake that she will be sleeping in her own apartment by herself that night.

The next day, Jake and Amy greet each other coldly. Boyle arrives and reveals that Jake told him about the fight, and offers to pay for the mattress himself, but Amy turns down his offer. Holt informs them that while the dealer refused to give up his supplier, they did find two identical hotel matchbooks in his possession. Jake notes that the matchbooks may be a code, since the same matches are removed from both matchbooks, which Amy decodes as a meeting for room 305 in the hotel. In the briefing room, Terry tells Rosa that he has brought in Rosa's former ballet coach, Miss Miriam, to prove his point that a kind and nurturing presence can be a good effect on a young life. To his surprise, Miss Miriam is instead harsh and critical of Rosa, who explains that Miss Miriam was never a nurturing person. Meanwhile, Boyle is depressed and tells Gina that he regrets trying to stand up to Holt. Gina however insists that Boyle was not in the wrong but Holt is behaving irrationally about Gertie. She then tells him that she is teaching Holt a lesson as Holt is heard yelling from his office. Boyle and Gina enter Holt's office to see Holt has sat on a cupcake. Gina then mimics Holt's earlier behavior and asks Holt to pay for sitting on her cupcake, claiming that she was not wrong in placing her cupcake on Holt's chair since she considers the cupcake to be special. Holt then realizes what Gina is trying to do and tells them that he understands his mistake. At the hotel, Jake and Amy have set up a surveillance system on room 305. The two then begin to argue about the mattress once again, with Amy claiming that Jake refuses to buy the mattress because he does not take their relationship seriously. Jake in turn points out that Amy has not told her mother that they are dating, prompting Amy to insist that she did not tell her mother as it would result in her being endlessly pestered with questions. Jake then tells Amy that she does not consider him to be worth the effort of dealing with her mother. Amy then appears to be rendered speechless before pointing out to Jake that the surveillance system is down. Playing back the footage, they discover that their argument was overheard by the drug supplier, who discovered the surveillance system and fled.

Jake takes the first step in their relationship

Jake takes the first step in their relationship

Jake and Amy both return to the precinct to be reprimanded by Holt separately. Jake initially claims that he and Amy were arguing about a professional matter, but drops the lie when Holt tells him that he heard the recording of the argument. Jake apologizes and tells Holt that that he believes his relationship with Amy is doomed. Holt tells Jake a story of a time when he first started dating Kevin Cozner. Both of them lived at least two hours away by public transport, but only a half hour by car. Neither of them owned a car and they both refused to buy one, as it would mean committing to the relationship, but they were both miserable as visiting each other was difficult and rare. One day however, Kevin visited Holt after purchasing Gertie to make commutes easier. Holt was touched and grateful that Kevin took the first step towards commitment to their relationship, but always regretted never having taken the first step himself. Jake then understands that he similarly has to take the first step in his relationship with Amy. Meanwhile, Rosa tells Terry that she let Sam go with a warning, as seeing Miss Miriam reminded her of how she ended up quitting ballet as her childhood was ruined. Rosa likewise does not want Sam to quit the program because she treated him too harshly, as Terry takes this in hand and claims that Rosa's decision was what he was hoping she would make after meeting Miss Miriam again. Holt tells Boyle that Gertie has been repaired and turns down a check that Boyle has prepared for him, and apologizes for his earlier behavior. Jake and Amy have managed to identify the supplier through facial recognition software, and located his address, although chances they will catch him are slim as the address is six years old. Jake tells Amy that he wants to buy a new mattress for her, apologizing for not doing it sooner as he was afraid Amy would one day realize she is better than him. Amy assures him that she does not think she is better, but while she was initially scared, she plans to call her mother that night to tell her they are dating. Jake then attempts to purchase the mattress online through his phone as Amy sees the supplier and they both rush out to arrest him.

Quotes[]

Holt: Santiago, take Boyle, and work the case.
Amy: Oh, but Jake, I mean, Detective Peralta brought in the perp, so...
Holt: Good point. Uh, Peralta and Boyle can work the case.
Jake: Actually, sir, I think we were kind of hoping we could work the case together.
Holt: Oh, are you two no longer...
Jake: Smooshing booties?
Holt: Yes, that's exactly how I was gonna finish my sentence.
Jake: Figured.
Amy: We are still dating. It's all above board. HR gets daily updates and are BCC'd on all our emails to each other.
Jake: (Says under his voice) That's why HR Jim keeps high-fiving me.
Holt: As a rule, I don't put couples in the field together, but you are two of my best detectives, so I will allow it. Just don't let any personal issues distract you from your work.
Jake: You have nothing to worry about. There's no personal issues here. We've never even had a fight.
Amy: It's true. Our only close call was when Jake didn't know who Will Shortz was.
Holt: Really? Never heard of the Puzzlemaster? (Looks to Amy) This is who you want to be with?
Amy: [Gives Cpt. Holt a perplexed look]
