Detective Charles Boyle (portrayed by Joe Lo Truglio) is a main character in all eight seasons of the show. He is the precinct's workhorse. He is has zero ability to read a room, and is not particularly brilliant or physically gifted, but he tries harder than anyone else. He has good gut instincts and is shown having the trust of the entire squad both with personal matters (depite his inability to keep a secret) and with casework. He is best friends with Jake Peralta, oftentimes to an uncomfortably obsessive degree. Currently he is in a longtime serious relationship with Genevieve Mirren-Carter with whom he adopted their son Nikolaj.

Charles is mild-mannered, eccentric and optimistic. He is also an intensely critical foodie, but is also needlessly critical of almost everything around him (and yet never in a pessimistic manner). He is a softie, caring deeply about the people around him, sometimes to an extreme level, but is continuously learning to find a balance. He is known for going Full Boyle when he has a crush on someone, taking things way to seriously, way too fast and scaring women off.
He has an extremely close, almost brotherly relationship with Jake Peralta - who acts primarily as Charles' guide. Charles worships Jake to the extent that he becomes violently jealous at the concept of being replaced.[2] He also involves himself unnecessarily deeply with Jake's relationship with Amy, which both parties see as creepy and annoying[3]. In spite of this, Charles and Jake are shown to (mostly) have a balanced friendship.
Charles also is known for his families closeness and weird traditions such as "giving up" but the running gag is often used to excentuate how much of a family-man he is. At one point he stated that his family crest is a white flag.
He often says sexually implicit things unintentionally and uses abbreviations that lead to a lot of confusion. On his wedding invitation it says STD (Sexually Transmitted Disease) which he says means "Save The Date". He also likes to use BM (Bowel Movement) which he says means "Best Man".
He is also incredibly dramatic - when Jake comments on how he read a certain book, he violently snapped Quit calling it a book. It was a visual journey!. He also commented at one point his belief that the god of rhythm was Sebastian from The Little Mermaid.
In spite of his eccentricities, Charles has frequently shown himself to be extremely brave when he needs to be - he throws himself in the path of an armed criminal when he realizes that Rosa Diaz was about to be shot by that criminal, only to end up getting shot himself.
Biography
Charles is close with his father Lynn Boyle, who he would later discover was not his biological father due to his mother's affair with a "rival florist." Lynn knowingly decided to forego determining Charles' parentage and raise him as his own, since he loved him either way.[4] Charles has at least one sibling, a sister, but she isn't seen at his father's wedding.[5] His grandmother bought him and his sister a Princess Tower, which he played with when he was younger.
Every year, Charles dresses up for Halloween, and every year, no-one understands what his costume is — although they sometimes just pretend not to, to wind him up.
Charles was married to a woman named Eleanor. At some point, Eleanor asked Charles to get a vasectomy, leading him to freeze some of his sperm in case he later wanted children. A year later, a perp repetitively hit Charles with a baseball bat in the crotch, making him completely sterile. He even says that he "shoots dust"[6]. In 2010, Charles and Eleanor divorced[7]. He hasn't been in a slump since. [8]After his divorce, Charles lived in Hercules' basement, his ex-wife's boyfriend.
At the start of the series, Charles had an obsessive crush on Detective Rosa Diaz, with whom he stood no chance at all. When a criminal attempted to shoot Diaz, Boyle leapt in front of her and was shot twice in the butt. She believed that he saved her life.[9] For his act of bravery, he was awarded a medal of valor.[10]
Towards the end of season one, Boyle gets engaged to Vivian Ludley, a woman who works with Kevin Cozner, but they never got married because she ends up moving to Canada. After meeting Vivan, however, he is able to move on from Rosa, and forms a deep friendship with her, becoming the first person she tells that she is bisexual.
Charles is currently in a relationship with Genevieve Mirren-Carter, whom he helped prove her innocence and with whom he shares an adoptive son, Nikolaj Boyle.
Relationships
Jake Peralta
Charles is one of Jake's best friends. Though at time Charles can be ridiculous, the two look out for each other, such as when Jake helps Charles when he goes "Full Boyle".
In the episode "The Bet", Charles starts to tease Jake that he may have a crush on Amy. He does the same in "Tactical Village", and encourages Jake to ask out Amy.
Charles often gets jealous whenever Jake seems to develop new friendships. It is evident in "Undercover", "The Cruise", and "The 9-8". He is also incredibly loyal, as Jake mentions in "Yippie Kayak". This trait of his is evident in multiple episodes throughout the series.
Rosa Diaz
Charles had a large crush on Rosa, up until meeting Vivian. By moving on from Rosa, Charles is able to form a close friendship with her, and the two remain best friends throughout the series.
Charles was the first character who Rosa told that she was bisexual and in a relationship with a woman.
Gina Linetti
Charles and Gina started sleeping together occasionally as of the end of season one, although it was only casual, and the two eventually end their friends with benefits relationship. They accidentally cause their parents to hook up, via inviting them both to a sex hotel. They attempt to break them apart, but this ends when Gina gives Charles father, Lynn, the blessing to marry her mother, Darlene.
Terry Jeffords
Despite Charles' obvious jealousy and one-sided rivalry with Terry, they seem to have a close relationship. They are shown to be friendly when Jake takes them both to Lohank's Stink Puddle Manor, and help each other through it. At times, Charles has exhibited surprising amounts of strength comparable to Jeffords, as shown when he lifted Jeffords back to his desk when his leg was broken.
Raymond Holt
Charles and Holt have a friendly, professional relationship. Charles is shown to be loyal to Holt, as he sometimes feels conflicted when both Jake and Holt ask him to do different things. Charles is shown to want to bond with Holt and he is happy when Holt is revealed to be a natural chef.
Genevieve Mirren-Carter

Charles and Genevieve are a couple, and share a lot of strange habits and quirks in common with one another, which others often find repulsive. They decide to have a child together, and adopted Nikolaj, despite only having been together for a few months.
Vivian Ludley

Charles and Vivian were previously engaged, however they broke up over disagreements on moving to Canada. They met in the episode "The Party" and were both shown to be foodies. Vivian was very impressed by Charles' culinary knowledge, and the two ended up making out in the closet. Vivian, like Charles, is shown to go 'Full Boyle'.
